Abstract:Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a common clinical disease. With the aggravation of population ageing, the incidence of IDD is increasing year by year, which brings serious economic burden to the society. The pathogenesis of IDD is complex, involving many aspects such as mechanical loading, inflammatory reaction, autoimmunity and so on. IL-17 is a major effector of T helper cell 17(Th17) and is involved in a variety of biological processes, including inflammation and autoimmunity. At present, more and more studies have found that IL-17 is highly correlated with IDD. IL-17 may accelerate the process of IDD by promoting the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) , exacerbating the inflammatory response, regulating the metabolism of nucleus pulposus cells, and promoting extracellular matrix angiogenesis. In this article, we will discuss the mechanism of IL-17-mediated IDD, and review the current research status of IL-17-based treatment of IDD.
